The project to be funded is called Desarrollo de una herramienta computacional para la certeza jurídica en materia ambiental and will be carried out by an interdisciplinary team composed of lawyers, linguists and engineers.

This initiative consists of the development of a computer system that, using models based on artificial intelligence, supports the decision-making of stakeholders, such as holders of mining projects in the Atacama Region, competent environmental authorities and communities.

The duration of this project will be two years, it is expected that at the end of the second part there will be a functional prototype of the computer system. “Based on this result, it is possible to estimate a development time of the definitive tool that packages and enables the service to its customers within a maximum period of one year. In parallel, the planning and execution of marketing and communications activities will be developed, ”says Rodrigo Alfaro.

It is planned to begin commercialization of the system before the first year passes from the completion of the project, starting mainly in the national mining sector. Subsequently, it will be oriented to other priority sectors in Chile and its applicability abroad will be explored.

The total budget of this initiative is CLP $339,236,102, where the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) contributes CLP $200,000,000.

The director of this project is José Ignacio Martínez of the Universidad de los Andes and the alternate director is Rodrigo Alfaro of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso. In addition, UANDES academics Silvia Bertazzo, Sergio Quijada and Carla Vairetti participate; and PUCV academics Alan Bronfman, Magdalena Prieto, René Venegas and Héctor Allende-Cid.
