ABSTRACT
Dr. René Venegas is a full professor at the Institute of Literature and Language Sciences (ILCL) of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV). He teaches both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in Linguistics at the ILCL. Between 2015 and 2017 he was director of the ILCL. Currently, he serves as a member of the Academic Chapter of the PUCV. His research is oriented to the analysis of specialized discourse (academic and professional) from the perspective of its written processing based on corpus linguistics, natural language processing and computational semantics. He has developed and applied computational and Natural Language Processing tools for text analysis. He has been a responsible researcher and co-investigator in multiple Fondecyt projects. Among his most relevant publications are: the book Lexicon-Semantic Relationships in Scientific Research Articles (2012), Writing from the Pedagogy of Gender: Guides to Writing the Final Bachelor’s Degree Work (2015) and Guides to Writing the Final Report of the Civil Computer Engineering Degree Project (2018). He has chapters in Working with Spanish Corpora (2007), Linguistics of Corpus and Specialized Discourses (2007), Academic and Professional Literacy in the 21st Century: Reading and Writing from Disciplines (2010), Discourse genres in Spanish: Academic and professional connections ( 2010 ), in the Academic and Professional Writing Manual (2014) and in The Routledge Handbook of Spanish Corpus Linguistics (2022).In addition, he has published numerous scientific articles on his research topics. During the years 2008 to 2013 he was vice president of the Chilean Society of Linguistics SOCHIL. Since 2011 he has been organizing the Workshop of Automatic Text Processing and Corpus WOPATEC. He is a founding member and former director of the Latin American Association of Writing Studies in Higher Education and Professional Contexts (Asociación Latinoamericana de Estudios de la Escritura en Educación Superior y Contextos Profesionales, ALES), a founding member of LatinCALL. He is also a founding member and President of the Latin American Association for Language Treatment (Asociación Latinoamericana de Tratamiento del Lenguaje, ALTL). He is director of the REDILEGRA research and innovation group (Rhetorical-Discursive and Lexical-Grammar Group) and of the Research Core in Applied Natural Language Processing #NiPLNA (Núcleo de Investigación en Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural Aplicado). Since 2021 he has been National Director of the UNESCO Chair for the improvement of reading and writing in Latin America.
